The National Institute of Zorig Chusum, often called the School of Traditional Arts, is one of the best places in Thimphu to understand Bhutan’s living artistic traditions. Established in 1971, the institute preserves and teaches the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan, collectively known as Zorig Chusum. These include painting, wood carving, sculpture, embroidery, weaving, woodturning, bamboo work, blacksmithing and traditional paper making. Students train for several years under experienced craftsmen, learning techniques that have shaped Bhutanese religious art, architecture and everyday objects for generations.

A visit offers something rarely available at ordinary museums: the chance to see traditional skills being practised by students in real workshops. Depending on the classes in session, visitors may see students working on detailed Buddhist paintings, carving intricate wooden designs or creating statues and decorative objects. The institute also has a small exhibition and sales area where traditional handicrafts and student work can be viewed. Photography inside the workshops may be restricted, so visitors should follow the instructions of the institute.

The institute is located in Kawajangsa, northern Thimphu, approximately 4 km from the city centre. The drive takes around 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic. It can easily be included with visits to nearby attractions such as the Takin Preserve and Dechenphu Lhakhang.

The institute generally welcomes visitors Monday to Friday during working hours, while access may be limited on weekends, public holidays and during school breaks. Since visitors are entering an educational institution where classes take place, it is advisable to check the day’s visiting arrangements before arriving.
