Tango & Cherie Monasteries

Tango and Cheri Monasteries make a rewarding day trip into the forested hills north of Thimphu, where Bhutan’s religious history is closely tied to the landscape. Located in the Dodena area, the two monasteries stand on separate hillsides and can be visited together. Cheri Monastery, or Chagri Dorjeden, was founded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1620 and became his first major monastic establishment in Bhutan. The site is closely associated with his meditation practice and remains an important centre of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition. A short distance away, Tango Monastery developed as an important centre of Buddhist scholarship and meditation. The sacred site dates back to the 13th century, while the present monastery took shape through the work of several important Buddhist masters, including Drukpa Kunley and Tenzin Rabgye.
The journey is an important part of the experience. The road from Thimphu follows the valley towards Dodena, after which visitors cross the Wang Chuu River and begin the forest hike towards Cheri. The trail passes pine trees, prayer flags, chortens and meditation retreats before reaching the monastery. After visiting Cheri, the route continues towards Tango, where another uphill trail leads through the forest to the monastery. Tango stands at a higher elevation and has a distinctive curved façade, while the mountain contains sacred caves and retreat sites associated with Buddhist masters. Together, the two monasteries offer a fascinating look at Bhutan’s religious history, meditation traditions and mountain landscapes.
The monasteries are approximately 14–15 km north of Thimphu, in the Dodena Valley. Both sites require walking from their respective road access points, so comfortable shoes and sufficient water are recommended. Cheri generally requires around 45–60 minutes of uphill walking from the traditional bridge over the Wang Chuu River. Tango also involves an uphill forest trail of approximately 40–60 minutes. Visiting both monasteries at a relaxed pace can take most of a day, especially for travellers who want time to explore the surrounding forest and enjoy the mountain views.
Altitude: Cheri approximately 2,850 m (9,350 ft); Tango approximately 2,800 m (9,185 ft)
Distance from Thimphu: Approximately 14–15 km
Walking Time: Approximately 40–60 minutes to each monastery
Difficulty: Moderate
Travel Tip: Tango and Cheri are close enough to visit on the same day.
