Established in 1975, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was created to care for orphaned and vulnerable Sri Lankan elephants. Set beside the Maha Oya River in the lush countryside of Kegalle, the centre has grown into an important institution for elephant care, conservation, breeding, and public education.

A visit offers an opportunity to observe elephants as they are cared for by their handlers and to witness parts of their daily routine. The river bathing sessions are particularly memorable, as elephants make their way to the water and spend time bathing and socializing. The centre also provides insight into Sri Lanka’s long-standing relationship with elephants and ongoing efforts to protect the species.

Opening Hours: Daily, approximately 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Ticket counters close earlier.
