The National Memorial Chorten is one of Thimphu’s most recognizable religious landmarks and an important place of devotion for Bhutanese people. Built in 1974 in memory of the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the chorten was inspired by his wish to create a monument dedicated to peace and the well-being of all beings.

Unlike many traditional stupas, the Memorial Chorten does not contain human remains. Instead, its interiors feature sacred Buddhist paintings, intricate sculptures, elaborate mandalas, and richly decorated prayer halls. The whitewashed structure, crowned with golden spires and bells, is a striking example of Bhutanese Buddhist architecture.

Throughout the day, local residents and visitors can be seen walking clockwise around the chorten, turning the prayer wheels, reciting prayers, or quietly reflecting. This living tradition makes the Memorial Chorten more than a historic monument. It remains an active spiritual centre and offers visitors a meaningful glimpse into Bhutan’s deeply rooted Buddhist culture.

Best Time to Visit: Morning or late afternoon, when the atmosphere is particularly peaceful and you can observe local devotees during their daily prayers.
