Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Hanuman Dhoka, occupies the heart of old Kathmandu and was once the political and ceremonial centre of the Kathmandu Valley. The complex developed over several centuries under the Malla kings and later served the Shah dynasty, with palaces, courtyards and temples added and rebuilt by successive rulers. Today, it forms one of the seven monument zones of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square contains an extraordinary concentration of traditional Newari architecture, with pagoda temples, palace buildings, carved wooden windows and elaborate courtyards packed into a relatively small area.
The complex is best explored slowly, since almost every corner has a story. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace contains a series of royal courtyards, including Nasal Chowk, Mul Chowk and Sundari Chowk, while the museums inside the palace preserve royal objects and personal belongings. Nearby, Kumari Ghar is the residence of Kathmandu’s Living Goddess and has one of the finest carved wooden façades in the square. The towering Taleju Temple, built by King Mahendra Malla in the 16th century, dominates the palace complex and opens to visitors only during the annual Dashain festival. Other highlights include the richly carved Jagannath Temple, the dramatic Kal Bhairav image, the Shiva-Parvati Temple and the rebuilt Kasthamandap, the great pagoda from which Kathmandu takes its name. During major festivals such as Indra Jatra, the square becomes the setting for processions, chariot festivals and traditional ceremonies that connect the historic buildings with the living culture of the city.
Kathmandu Durbar Square is in the centre of the old city, within walking distance of Thamel, Ason and other major areas of central Kathmandu. Private vehicles have limited access around the immediate square, so walking is usually the easiest way to explore the surrounding heritage streets.
