Gangtey Nature Trail

Gangtey Nature Trail is a gentle hiking route through the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, offering one of the best ways to experience the valley on foot. The trail begins near Gangtey Monastery and winds through pine forests, open meadows, traditional farmhouses and small villages before reaching the valley floor. Along the way, visitors get wide views of the surrounding mountains and the wetlands that make Phobjikha such an important habitat for the black-necked crane. The trail is particularly beautiful in winter, when the valley’s famous cranes arrive from the Tibetan Plateau.
The walk is relatively easy and suits travellers who want a taste of Bhutanese countryside without undertaking a demanding mountain trek. Prayer flags, grazing animals, farmhouses and small streams appear along the route, while the changing landscape gives the walk a pleasant variety. During the crane season, walkers may also spot the birds in the fields and wetlands from a respectful distance. The trail usually takes around 1.5–2 hours, although visitors can take longer if they stop for photographs or birdwatching.
The trail begins near Gangtey Monastery, approximately 75 km from Punakha and around 130 km from Thimphu. Visitors can drive directly to the monastery and begin the walk from there. The trail descends gradually towards the floor of the Phobjikha Valley before continuing through woodland and farmland.
The route is generally considered easy, although the high altitude can make even a gentle walk feel more strenuous for some visitors. Good walking shoes are recommended, particularly after rain or during winter when parts of the trail can become muddy or slippery.
