The Folk Heritage Museum offers a glimpse into everyday life in traditional Bhutan, with a focus on how ordinary families lived, cooked, worked and celebrated before modern amenities became widespread. The museum was established in 2001 by Her Majesty Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck and is housed in a traditional three-storey rammed-earth and timber building in Thimphu. The house resembles a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, complete with a kitchen, living spaces, storage areas and household objects that illustrate the practical side of rural life.

One of the museum’s most interesting features is the chance to see how a traditional Bhutanese home functioned as a self-contained household. Visitors can explore rooms filled with farming tools, cooking utensils, religious objects, textiles and everyday possessions. The museum also maintains a small traditional garden and demonstrates aspects of Bhutanese food preparation and rural customs. Rather than focusing on kings, monasteries or monumental architecture, the museum brings attention to the lives of the farmers and families who formed the foundation of Bhutanese society.

The Folk Heritage Museum is located in Kawajangsa, northern Thimphu, close to the National Institute of Zorig Chusum. It is approximately 3 km from central Thimphu, with a drive of around 10–15 minutes. Its location makes it easy to combine with the Institute of Traditional Arts, the National Library and other attractions in northern Thimphu.

The museum is generally open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with shorter hours on Saturdays. It is usually closed on Sundays and public holidays, although schedules can change according to the season. Visitors should allow around 45 minutes to 1 hour to explore the house and its exhibits.
