Chimi Lhakhang is one of Bhutan’s most famous pilgrimage sites, located on a small hill in the fertile Punakha Valley. In the Dzongkha Language (national language of Bhutan), Lhakhang means Temple. Built in 1499, Chimi Lhakhang is dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, the legendary Buddhist master known as the Divine Madman for his unconventional teachings, humour and colourful approach to spreading Buddhism. Today, Chimi Lhakhang is widely known as Bhutan’s fertility temple, and attracts pilgrims from across the country and around the world who come to seek blessings for offspring and happiness.

The temple’s peaceful setting is part of its charm. Surrounded by rice fields, traditional farmhouses and rolling countryside, it offers visitors a glimpse into rural Bhutanese life. The journey to the temple is as memorable as the destination itself, with scenic footpaths, prayer flags and panoramic views of the Punakha Valley accompanying visitors along the way.

Chimi Lhakhang is located near Lobesa, approximately 10 km from Punakha and about 60 km from Thimphu. Visitors usually drive to Sopsokha Village, where the walking trail begins. From here, a pleasant 20-minute walk leads through rice fields and traditional Bhutanese villages before reaching the temple on its hilltop setting.

For those who prefer a shorter route, a local access road reaches a parking area closer to the temple, reducing the walk to around 10 minutes. Most travellers, however, choose the traditional village trail, as it offers beautiful countryside views and an authentic introduction to one of Bhutan’s most beloved religious sites.
