Buddha Dordenma, widely known as Buddha Point, is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Thimphu. The enormous gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha sits on a hilltop overlooking the capital, with the Wang Chuu valley and surrounding mountains spread out below. The statue stands approximately 51.5 metres (169 feet) high, making it one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world. What many visitors do not realise is that the monument contains 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside the main structure, each cast in bronze and gilded. The statue was constructed to fulfil an ancient prophecy associated with Guru Padmasambhava and to commemorate the centenary of Bhutan’s monarchy.

The hilltop location makes Buddha Point particularly rewarding for panoramic views. From the base of the statue, visitors can look across much of Thimphu Valley, while the surrounding Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park provides a peaceful setting of pine forest and walking trails. The statue itself forms part of a larger meditation complex, with a spacious shrine hall beneath the main figure. The interior contains numerous smaller Buddha images and intricate Buddhist artwork, giving visitors a chance to appreciate the scale of the monument from within as well as from the viewpoint outside.

Buddha Dordenma is located at Kuensel Phodrang, approximately 5–6 km from central Thimphu. The easiest way to reach it is by car or taxi, with the drive taking around 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. The road climbs steadily through the hills before reaching the large open area around the statue.

There is ample space for vehicles near the monument, and visitors do not need to undertake a long hike to reach the statue. Those who wish to explore the surrounding nature park can continue along the walking trails around the hill. Early morning and late afternoon are particularly pleasant times to visit, when the light over Thimphu Valley is often excellent.
