The Black-Necked Crane Information Centre is located on the edge of the Phobjikha Valley, one of Bhutan’s most important winter habitats for the endangered black-necked crane. Established to promote awareness and conservation of these remarkable birds, the centre introduces visitors to the cranes, their seasonal migration and the fragile wetland ecosystem that supports them. The birds arrive in Bhutan from the Tibetan Plateau in late October or early November and usually remain in the valley until February or March, when they return north. Their arrival has become an important seasonal event for the communities of Phobjikha, which have developed traditional practices to protect the birds and their habitat.

Inside the centre, visitors can learn about the cranes through photographs, information displays, educational exhibits and short films. One of the most memorable features is the observation area, where visitors may spot cranes feeding and resting in the wetlands during the winter season. Telescopes are available for closer observation, and the centre also explains the threats faced by the species, including habitat loss, power lines and changes to wetland conditions. The centre provides an excellent introduction to the valley before exploring the surrounding fields and viewpoints.

The centre is located in Phobjikha Valley, approximately 2 km from Gangtey Monastery and around 75 km from Punakha. The drive from Punakha takes approximately 2.5–3 hours, while reaching Phobjikha from Thimphu generally takes around 4–5 hours. The centre is easily accessible by road, with parking available nearby.

The best time to visit is between November and February, when the black-necked cranes are usually present in the valley. Early morning and late afternoon are particularly good times for birdwatching, when the cranes are often active in the fields and wetlands. Outside the migration season, the centre remains useful for learning about the species and the valley’s conservation efforts, although visitors should not expect to see cranes.
