Punakha is a historic valley in central Bhutan, located at an altitude of approximately 1,200 metres (3,940 feet) above sea level. It lies around 72 km from Thimphu, with a typical drive taking about 2.5 to 3 hours. The valley has a relatively warm subtropical climate and is famous for its fertile farmland, terraced rice fields and spectacular mountain scenery. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and remains an important religious centre today. The valley is best known for Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most magnificent fortresses, set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
